Do Grapefruit and Statins Really Don't Mix?
Can you believe that a healthy fruit like grapefruit can't be combined with routine cholesterol medication?
It sounds like a strange myth, but the science behind the interaction between statins and grapefruit is very real. Eating or drinking grapefruit while taking statins can actually block the enzymes that break down your medication, causing your body to absorb far too much of the drug and essentially turning a normal daily dose into an accidental overdose.
In the latest episode of SAC Health Answers, our CEO and family physician, Dr. Jason Lohr, breaks down why this drug-food interaction happens, why taking them several hours apart still won't protect you, and which citrus fruits are still 100% safe to enjoy!
