"Let's Talk About FQHC Clinics" - SAC Health Answers (Ep. 37)
When you're looking at your healthcare options, you might look around your community and ask: "What is the difference between an FQHC clinic and a regular doctor's office?"
It's a question we hear all the time at SAC Health. FQHC stands for Federally Qualified Health Center. Simply put, these centers receive support from the federal government to provide comprehensive medical care to neighborhoods and communities that need it most.
But what does that mean for you when you walk through our doors, and how are we different from the traditional clinic down the street? Let’s break it down.
1. High-Quality Care, Accessible to All
The most significant difference lies in who we serve. At an FQHC, our doors are wide open to everyone. Whether you have Medi-Cal, Medicare, or no health insurance at all, you can receive top-tier care.
For patients paying out of pocket, we offer services on a sliding fee scale based on household size and income. We fundamentally believe that high-quality, compassionate healthcare should be an affordable reality for every single person in our community, not a privilege.
2. Governed by the Community (The 51% Rule)
There is also a unique, community-first difference behind the scenes of an FQHC. By law, an FQHC must be governed by a Board of Directors where more than half (at least 51%) of the board members are actual patients of the clinic.
This means the very people living in our community and using our services are the ones helping to make the rules, guide our mission, and decide what healthcare services we offer. You will rarely, if ever, find this level of direct community representation at a standard private clinic.
3. A Financial Lifeline for Families and the Healthcare System
FQHCs serve as a vital healthcare safety net. By focusing on preventive care and helping people manage chronic conditions early on, we save patients, families, and the wider community an incredible amount of money.
