Have you ever wondered how often you need to check your feet? Many people think cutting toenails is just about keeping them short. But for some people, routine foot care can actually save a life!

In the latest episode of SAC Health Answers, our CEO, Dr. Jason Lohr, talked with foot expert Dr. Andrew Camarena. They answered a very important question about how to keep your feet healthy.

Why Foot Care is Life-Saving Medicine

For a healthy person, a tiny scratch, a nick from a nail clipper, or a hangnail is no big deal. It heals up fast.

But for someone with diabetes or nerve damage, a tiny scratch can be very dangerous. Because of nerve damage, they might not even feel the injury. If a small cut goes unnoticed, it can quickly turn into a huge infection or a bad sore. In severe cases, it can even lead to losing a toe or a foot.

When you see a foot doctor every three months, they are doing much more than just trimming your toenails. They are doing a safety check on your whole foot. They look closely for tiny changes in your:

  • Skin color

  • Skin temperature

  • Blood flow

  • Sensation (how well you can feel things)

By looking at these things, doctors catch small problems before they turn into major health crises!
