Protecting Your Child from Measles at School

With measles outbreaks making headlines, many parents are asking: "Is my child truly protected if they’re vaccinated, even if others aren't?"

In Episode 25 of SAC Health Answers, Dr. Jason Lohr explains why your child’s vaccination is their strongest shield.

The 97% Shield

The short answer is yes. If your child has received both doses of the MMR vaccine, they are highly protected.

  • Effectiveness: Two doses are approximately 97% effective at preventing measles.

  • How it works: Even if exposed, your child’s immune system is already trained to fight the virus before it causes illness.

  • Herd Immunity: Widespread vaccination ensures the virus has nowhere to go, protecting those who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons.

3 Action Steps for Parents

  1. Verify Records: Confirm with your pediatrician that your child has received both MMR doses.

  2. Stay Informed: If you hear of a local exposure, contact your doctor immediately to discuss your options.

  3. Wellness First: Encourage simple habits like frequent handwashing to keep their overall immune system strong.
