SAC Health Answers, Ep. 21: "Let's Talk About Sleep Aids and Insomnia in Your 40s."

Are you tired of being tired? For many men and women in their 40s, a good night’s sleep starts to feel like a luxury. Between the demands of a high-stress career and the natural physiological changes that come with age, "shutting down" at night isn't as easy as it used to be.

In Episode 21 of SAC Health Answers, Dr. Jason Lohr discusses why you might be struggling to fall asleep and what you should consider before reaching for a bottle of sleep aids.

Understanding the "Why" Before the "What"

In your 40s, sleep disruption is rarely caused by just one thing. For both men and women, this decade brings significant shifts:

  • Hormonal Changes: For women, perimenopause can cause night sweats and fluctuations in progesterone that disrupt deep sleep. For men, a gradual dip in natural melatonin and testosterone can affect sleep quality.

  • Mental Overdrive: High-stress careers keep the brain active long after clock-out time.

  • The Blue Light Trap: Staring at screens until the moment your head hits the pillow tells your brain it’s still daytime.

Decoding Sleep Aids: OTC vs. Melatonin

If you are considering medicinal help, it’s important to understand the two main categories:

  1. Over-the-Counter (OTC): These usually contain antihistamines. While effective for one-off nights, they often cause "morning grogginess" and aren't intended for long-term use.

  2. Melatonin: A supplement that mimics your body’s sleep hormone. It's great for resetting your internal clock, but over-reliance can interfere with your body's natural hormone production.

The Big Risk: Dependency. You want to avoid a situation where your brain "forgets" how to fall asleep naturally.

A Whole-Person Approach to Rest

At SAC Health, we believe in treating the root cause. For chronic insomnia, a consultation with your primary care provider or a behavioral health specialist can provide long-term solutions, such as stress management or hormone health reviews that work better than a pill.
